Apple Butter

Apple butter is a highly concentrated apple sauce. It is made by slow cooking apples for 11 hours, which causes the sugars to caramelize, giving it it's dark color. I like this on toasted slices of Grandma's English Muffin Bread. It is a great way to use up an abundance of apples in the fall.

Peel, core, then shred 5 1/2 pounds apples (about 13 large) in a food processor.

Don't have a food processor? Just slice/ chunk.

Place in a crock pot:

the prepared apples

2 c sugar

2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp cloves

1/4 tsp salt

Stir. Cover & cook on high for 1 hour.

Reduce heat to low & cook about 9 hours.

Stir occasionally. It should be thick & dark brown.

Cook uncovered for an hour to thicken. Keep refrigerated, freeze or can.
