Ham Bean Soup

From the kitchen of Joan Knewasser

_______________________________________

Save the bone from your ham & put it to good use. This soup makes a wonderful dinner on a cold winter day. This was in the first Family Cookbook.

8 c water

1 lb bag dried Great Northern beans

Heat water & beans to a boil.

Boil 2 minutes.

Remove from heat & let stand for 1 hour.

Add to beans:

meaty ham bone

8 oz can tomato sauce

1 onion, chopped

1 Tbsp instant beef bullion

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp pepper

1 garlic clove, crushed

Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat.

Cover & simmer for 2 hours.

Take ham bone out & cut off meat.

Add meat to soup.

Add:

2 c mashed potatoes

2 medium carrots, cut up

2 stalks celery, sliced

Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat.

Cover & simmer for 45 minutes.

Add:

1 or 2 c milk
