From the kitchen of Kay Putano<\/h4>\n\n\n

Warm:<\/p>\n

2 Tbsp butter<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

1\/3 c water or milk<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Combine with a pastry blender:<\/p>\n

1 1\/2 c flour<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

1\/4 tsp salt<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

1 egg<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Add warmed butter & water mixture.<\/p>\n

Knead the dough on a board until it is elastic & no longer sticks to the board.<\/p>\n

Place the dough on a floured board & cover with a warmed bowl for 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

Place dough in the middle of a large table covered with a floured cloth.<\/p>\n

Gently pull and stretch the dough, placing both hands under it until it is as thin as paper.<\/p>\n

Filling:<\/p>\n

4 lbs tart apples, finely chopped<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

1 1\/2 tsp cinnamon<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

1\/4 lb blanched slivered almonds<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

1 c sugar<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

1 1\/2 c raisins (optional)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Carefully spread filling over dough.<\/p>\n

Mix:<\/p>\n

2 c bread crumbs<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

5 Tbsp butter<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Spread over filling.<\/p>\n

Fold the dough over one side, hold up the tablecloth & let the strudel roll into a huge roll onto a greased sheet. Form into a crescent shape.<\/p>\n

Bake @ 400, 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

Reduce heat to 350. Bake until crisp and brown.<\/p>\n

Serve warm or cold.<\/p>\n
