Calculate 1 day for every 4 pounds, so a 20 lb turkey would take 5 days to thaw in the refrigerator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Day Before<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cube<em><strong>&nbsp;2 large loaves of <\/strong><\/em><strong><em>bread<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;&amp; leave out overnight, occasionally stir to make sure it all gets hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2 Hours Before Going in Oven<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take stuff out of both ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wash &#8220;<em><strong>inside parts<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; &amp; put in a pot with approx.<em><strong>&nbsp;3 c water<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simmer 1 hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rinse bird with cold water &amp; salt, let faucet run in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shake&nbsp;<strong><em>1 Tbsp flour<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;into oven bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place&nbsp;<em><strong>2 stalks <\/strong><\/em><strong><em>celery<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;<em><strong>1 med<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>ium <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>onion<\/em><\/strong>, halved, in bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place bag in roaster\/ pan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put turkey on top of veggies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twist tie bag &amp; place in fridge until ready to stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1\/2 Hour Before Going in Oven<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saute&nbsp;<em><strong>2 1\/2- 3 sticks of butter<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;(no subs) &amp;&nbsp;<em><strong>1 medium diced <\/strong><\/em><strong><em>onion<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toss with hard bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Season with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>salt<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>pepper<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>celery salt<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>1\/2 tsp <\/strong><\/em><strong><em>sage<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>poultry seasoning<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use &#8220;parts water&#8221; to moisten the dressing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firmly pack in turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What doesn&#8217;t fit, add more parts water to &amp; put in casserole, bake covered @ 350 for 1\/2 hr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dry turkey (just what&#8217;s exposed).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rub with <strong><em>crisco<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>salt &amp; pepper<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seal bag with tie included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cut 6 slits, 1\/2 inch each, in top of bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place thermometer through a slit, into the thickest part of inner thigh, not touching bone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bake @ 350.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Time depends on the size of the turkey, temp should be 170.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">12-16 lbs 2 1\/2 &#8211; 3 hrs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">16-20 lbs 3 &#8211; 3 1\/2 hrs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">20-24 lbs 3 1\/2 &#8211; 4 hrs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May take longer than it says, may add 1\/2 hr to meet schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tear bag to let it cool for 1\/2 hr, this also lets juices set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photo by Stephanie Knewasser<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joan Knewasser<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3532,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"pgc_sgb_lightbox_settings":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[32,7],"tags":[104,106,116,359,421],"class_list":["post-3531","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-chicken","category-main","tag-joan-knewasser","tag-recipe","tag-stuffing","tag-thanksgiving","tag-turkey","latest_post"],"aioseo_notices":[],"aioseo_head":"\n\t\t<!-- All in One SEO 5.0.0.1 - aioseo.com -->\n\t<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Turkey requires frequent basting, but I use an oven bag, which means no basting.
